Trash Cinema Vol. 2: The Best of 1999
„Throughout the history of filmmaking, one year in particular stands out as representing the absolute best of cinema. This twelve-month filmmaking masterclass is also known as 1999. The year we reached a pinnacle of cinematic and cultural brilliance, so good that even today, twenty-five years later, we can still find a DVD copy in your forgotten collection.
Films like “The Matrix,” “Fight Club,” “The Sixth Sense,” and “American Beauty” didn’t just entertain; they reshaped the future of movies to come. The lineup of this one year offered something for all of us, from the emotional storytelling of “Boys Don’t Cry”, and “Magnolia” to the philosophical depth of “The Matrix” or the satirical edge of “Office Space.” These films achieved critical acclaim but also created dedicated fan bases and sparked cultural discussions that continue to this day.
Someone even wrote a book about it. Brian Raftery’s “Best. Movie. Year. Ever,” highlights the extraordinary array of influential films released during this year. There is a wave of media backing up the claim. MediaSocietyCulture and Entertainment Weekly published articles about the lasting legacy of 1999’s diverse films mentioning films like “The Blair Witch Project” and “Being John Malkovich”, which pushed the boundaries of storytelling and cinematic technique, setting new standards for filmmaking.
For the last twenty-five years, these titans of cinema have been found littered among family VHS and DVD collections. We bet your mum or dad might even have a copy back home right now.
“One’s trash is another’s treasure” is a motto we like to use here at Trash Cinema. For our second volume, we decided to program our films based on what we can find in the trash piles of Berlin. We figure junk that lasts this long deserves a second viewing.
Trash Cinema Vol.2 takes us on a dumpster dive deep into the heart of Berlin’s junkyards and fleamarkets. We will scroll through Kleinanzeigen listings, rummage through every “Zu Verschenken” box, and travel all across Berlin in search of DVDs and VHS tapes of films released in 1999. The best of these found treasures will be screened during the Trash Cinema Vol. 2.
Join us to celebrate the beauty of Trash Cinema, an open-air cinematic event hosted together with Mobile Kino and Berliner Berg.
TLDR: Please ask your mum and dad if we can borrow some of their old videotapes. „
